Dance on the Lawn returned to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Saturday with its first live, in-person performances in the pandemic, after holding a virtual festival in 2020.
The annual festival is a showcase and mentoring launchpad for choreographic talent from New York and New Jersey. Founded by Montclair resident Charmaine Warren in 2014, Dance on the Lawn aims to increase New Jersey’s exposure to dance by bringing professional and emerging companies together with students of dance from around the state to perform in a community setting.
This year’s lineup included: Dance on the Lawn emerging commissioned New Jersey choreographer Amber Sloan; New Jersey schools Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts, DanceWorks Studios, Movement Arts Project/Dance for Joy and Maurice Chestnut’s Dance Therapy; New Jersey companies Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and Inimois Dance; and New York companies 277 Dance Project (with Nicole Philippidis) and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (with Chalvar Monteiro and Jacquelin Harris in excerpts from Merce Cunningham’s “Landrover”).
