Stepping into Black history: DC dance company’s virtual program caps off Juneteenth

For the 1st time, Juneteenth will be celebrated as a national holiday getaway, and a D.C. dance troupe with roots in the Black working experience on American university campuses will be furnishing a digital performance to mark the party.

Action Afrika! performs what is identified as “stepping,” a style that was produced in the early 1900s among the members of the Black sororities and fraternities that make up what is now identified as “the Divine 9.”

C. Brian Williams, founder and govt director of Stage Afrika!, explained what stepping is.

“We determine stepping as a really energetic, polyrhythmic, percussive dance variety developed by African American higher education students.”

Williams, a Howard College alumnus, reported the dance fashion is “folkloric dance. It’s a ritual it’s a common dance.”

This Saturday on Juneteenth, Stage Afrika! is offering a no cost, virtual overall performance that will contain 3 choreographed parts, which include a tribute to the Small Rock 9 — the Black young people who entered the all-white Central Superior School in Arkansas three a long time just after the Supreme Court dominated that segregated schooling was illegal in 1954.
