Thor Love and Thunder changed Gorr’s design due to Harry Potter

A few days away from Thor: Love and Thunder hitting our cinemas, director Taika Waititi has weighed in on why villain Gorr looks a little different than he does in the comics.

The reason for such a transformation can be found, according to Waititi, in Gorr’s resemblance to Harry Potter’s main antagonist Voldemort, played by Ralph Fiennes in the film franchise.

“His face in the comics, unfortunately, does kind of resemble Voldemort,” the filmmaker told IGN.

“People are just gonna automatically make that connection,” Waititi also said.

And it is uncanny. Similarly to Fiennes’ noseless character, classic Marvel Gorr has a flat face. The God Butcher also sports tentacles on the side of his face and sharp teeth.

Played by Christian Bale, the movie’s villain is as aloof and terrifying as the comic book Gorr, but he has been given a nose and lacks the tendrils extending from his head. Outfit-wise, live-action Gorr has traded the original black cape for a pristine tunic.

“So we decided to depart from that design a bit more and like, sorta keep elements of the tone and the fact that he had the sword,” Waititi continued, adding: “But really it was about his story that was the most important thing for us.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will see Chris Hemsworth reprise the role of the titular god alongside Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, new King of Asgard.

The film also marks the MCU return for actress Natalie Portman as Jane Foster for the first time since Thor: The Dark World (if we exclude that brief flashback appearance in Avengers: Endgame). In this new chapter, the astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend will take on the mantle of Mighty Thor as she’s undergoing cancer treatment.

Thor: Love and Thunder has a release date of July 7 in the UK and July 8 in the US. The other three Thor movies are available to stream now on Disney+.
